Brand new from M9 Entertainment, "Pulmonary Artistry" is the final story in the "Heartifact" series created by the Magic Heart Genies. For those unfamiliar with the Magic Heart Genies, the group is comprised of the legendary freestyle innovator M.C. Myka 9, his label counterpart M.C. JtheSarge and the multi-talented Dj and Producer Drez.
At it again, the MHGs come with their classic incorporation of live instrumentation of guitar, horns, and percussion with software, synthesizers and drum machines. Also, for the first time the Genies feature a new artist, the very soulful singer Cam. One half of the album started in late 2010 at Josef Leimberg's Iron Worx studio where producers Fat Jack, Evan V and Lenny Pettinelli teamed up with the Genies to create this final saga. Songs like "Momz", "Doin Too Much", "Move Beat" and a few more were all directed by Fat Jack and feature live bass by Sarge and guitar by Evan V. The other half of "Pulmonary Artistry" was created at Sarge's One Wise Studios where most of the magic has been captured since 2008. Tracks like "Youths Unite" produced by Myka 9 and "Jungle Green" produced by Tru, were written and recorded together by Myka and Sarge. Myka tracked many of his vocals for the album at his personal studio as well. The title track was produced by Dj Northstar, aka "GBob", where the Genies let off multiple styles diving into some cosmic effects on the vocals at times and topped off by Drez's ability to work the turntable like an instrument. On that track, Drez takes a big musical role getting off some of his own pulmonary art!
There is no doubt of the love and respect that the Magic Heart Genies have for Hip Hop culture. All three members have put in decades of devotion and dedication to the support and elevation of this beautiful genre. The platform for the sound of the Genies has always been to stretch Hip Hop into other areas of music such as, Jazz, Bhangra, Blues, Electronic, and even R&B and is evident throughout the three album series. There was always a general format of versatility and an open-minded approach to creating each song and it was largely due to Myka 9. Always a pioneer, Myka has written and recorded some of his best work ever on this new album like on tracks "Repentance" (Produced by Josef Leimberg) as well as many others on the first and second album. A true musician, Drez was able to compliment every album so perfectly, JtheSarge stated he's hardly ever done any serious editing or re-recording of Drez's Dj work for any of the Genies' albums. "Maybe just a little added effect or EQ and volume adjustment here and there, but rarely do I need to spend much more time on this part of a song once I got his work into a session." Myka and Sarge primarily recorded and mixed every project themselves, with help at times from Nor Cal's Piet Dalmolen. The hilarious skits throughout the series were created by Shannon Ivey, aka the "Goddess Nexxus", Myka, Sarge and Lenny Pettinelli aka the curator "Dr Wesley". These attributes helped reinforce the progression the story of the missing "mystical microphone" the Genies "recovered" and were using for positivity and good, ie. the elevation Hip Hop music.
Don't let the motivation of the series confuse you and have you thinking the MHGs are saints or purist. No. The Genies are grown men and always get their share of "dirty" or even "sexually oriented" songs, like they have in the past. Even though the albums have been primarily vulgarity-free there has always been a few tracks on each record that were written for the lovely ladies of this world. The new album boast a few more than in the past like the tunes "Good Girls" and "Jungle Green".
The Magic Heart Genies have been lucky enough to be able to tour and promote their works in Europe on a multi-city campaign with Haiku De Tat as well as a National run in 2010 featuring the "Gangsta Goddess" Medusa and Dubstep duo Dubba L, along with a number of shows throughout the West and Northwest coast. The whole ride has been a blessed-one leading them to this opus and end to the story of the "Heartifact". "We are musicians first and foremost. Any musician can par with another once you just simply play your instrument and/or voice your song together. Magic happens when you workout the concept, the rhythm and put some love into it. That is what we did and here is where we are now. Proudly! We did that!" JtheSarge.
